Good neighbour scheme

Organisation: Neighbourhood Schemes
Date: 18 July 2012

Activity:
Volunteered for the Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme in Brighton & Hove

Comments:
The Impetus Neighbourhood Care Scheme in Brighton & Hove recruits local volunteers to support older local people, people with physical disabiities and carers.

I have been visiting an older lady who lives nearby on a weekly basis who wanted someone to visit for a cup of tea and a chat. I really believe I get more out of it than she does as her tales of the war and local history are fascinating; I really enjoy our time chatting.

Mentor

Organisation: Rewrite
Date: 21 June 2012

Activity:
The Leaders Together programme: I worked as a mentor for a Director at Rewrite, meeting usually every week for about an hour to discuss approaches to fundraising, strategic planning, marketing, etc.
Comments:
It has been a highly rewarding experience so far (I am about halfway through the programme), and opportunity to work with someone very intelligent, capable and driven.

I would highly recommend the Leaders Together programme. It offers great support and is an ideal opportunity to support community organisations with your skills and experience.

Volunteer supporting children's learning

Organisation: Hackney Pirates
Date: 30 May 2012

Activity:
We are looking for Volunteers to support young people's learning at our after school clubs. Projects have included film, animation, play-writing, creative writing and radio. Sessions run from 3.45 to 6.45pm every week night, though volunteers can attend as frequently as they wish.
The role involves encouraging and supporting the child they are matched with for each session with their homework for one hour and then participating in the creative project we are working on, with a maintained focus on supporting the child.
Volunteers can suggest ideas for creative projects and lead them, but this is by no means compulsory.
There are also many opportunities to become involved with the running of the organisation, such as helping with our computer systems, designing marketing material, helping with fundraising and general DIY.
Comments:
It is such an exciting place to be, and the effect on the children is so evident. I find being at Hackney Pirates freshes and invogorates me. I always felt supported and able to ask for support, but really enjoyed the chance to have some one to one time with the child I was working with.

Learning Support with you people

Organisation: Hackney Pirates
Date: 23 May 2012

Activity:
I have been a regular volunteer with Hackney Pirates for a while.

Every session we have a 15 minute brief before the children arrive when the session leader tells us the structure of the session, reminds us of health and safet details and matches us with a child. When the children arrive we work on homework, and if they don't have any the child can read one to one with the volunteer. After a break when volunteers and children can play games and chat, the group start to work on whatever the creative project is currently the focus. The last session I volunteered at involved a performance from some story tellers who then led the group in writing some performance poetry. Throughout the second half volunteers support one child in their work. At the end of the session the children fill out their 'Pirate Logs' and we encourage them to reflect on what they have achieved in the session, what went well and what could be better next time.

After the children have left we fill in volunteer evaluation sheets and have a de-brief with the session leader.

Comments:
Everyone I met is very lovely and working with the children feels more rewarding the more I do it.

It's a wonderful and original service in a truly creative place that celebrates imagination and team work.
